CANINE CARE SPECIALIST

Job Description

Essential Duties and Primary Job Purpose

Responsible for the daily care and well-being of shelter dogs, ensuring their health, exercise, well-being, and safety. This role involves feeding, grooming, cleaning kennels, monitoring for signs of illness or injury, and providing enrichment activities. They also assist with adoptions and participate in meet and greets. Reports to Kennel Supervisor.

Representative Tasks and Major Responsibilities

  • Feeding, watering and providing basic care and exercise for dogs, following specific feeding instructions.
  • Bathing, brushing and clipping nails as needed.
  • Maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of kennels, runs, animal care areas and exercise yards. Adhering to established protocols for animal handling, disease control, safety procedures and hygiene.
  • Provide opportunity for play, exercise and mental stimulation to promote physical and mental well-being of all dogs.
  • Observing dogs for signs of illness, injury or behavioral changes, and promptly documenting concerns to the appropriate personnel. Maintain records of animal care including feeding, medication administration, and bathing and grooming of all canines.
  • Interacting with potential adopters, providing information about the dogs available for adoption, and assisting with the adoption process.
  • Working as part of a team with other staff members and volunteers to ensure the smooth operation of the facility. Ensuring the cleanliness of the entire facility, including common areas, storage areas, laundry, dishes and trash.
  • Assisting with inventory and restocking of food and supplies including deliveries of pet food in the lobby area.
  • Must have a genuine love for animals and a desire to provide them with the best possible care.
  • Must ensure all canines have updated kennel cards on the kennels in view of the public.

    FELINE CARE SPECIALIST

    Essential Duties and Primary Job Purpose

    Responsible for the daily care and well-being of cats in the shelter. The duties include feeding, cleaning, providing enrichment, monitoring health and behavior, and administering medications or treatments as directed. They also play a crucial role in maintaining a safe, sanitary and odor free environment for the cats and interacting with potential adopters. Reports to Executive Director.

    Representative Tasks and Major Responsibilities

    • Ensure cats receive appropriate food and fresh water according to their individual needs and dietary requirements.
    • Maintaining clean and sanitary living spaces for the cats, including litter areas, and adequate amounts of litter in boxes. Adhering to established protocols for animal handling, disease control, and safety procedures.
    • Provide opportunities for play, exercise and mental stimulation to promote physical and mental well-being.
    • Administering medications, vaccines and treatments as prescribed by a veterinarian.
    • Observing cats for signs of illness, injury or behavioral changes, and promptly documenting concerns to the appropriate personnel. Maintain accurate records of animal care including feeding and medication administration.
    • Interacting with potential adopters, providing information about the cats available for adoption, and assisting with the adoption process.
    • Working as part of a team with other staff members and volunteers to ensure the smooth operation of the facility. Ensuring the cleanliness of the entire facility, including common areas, storage areas and laundry.

    FRONT DESK/ANIMAL CARE SPECIALIST

    Essential Duties and Primary Job Purpose

    Greets all visitors, answers inquiries, and provides information about shelter policies, procedures, and available animals for adoption. Reports to Executive Director.

    Representative Tasks and Major Responsibilities

    • Answer phones and manage correspondence through emails and messages from the public. Return calls for all messages left on the answering system.
    • Guide potential adopters through the process and assist with completing necessary forms to ensure proper documentation.
    • Maintain animal records in the shelter software system, from new arrivals through adoption, including all medical treatments and vaccinations. Organizing and maintaining physical and digital files related to animal intake, adoption, and other shelter operations for reporting purposes.
    • Processing adoption or any other fees, donations, and other financial transactions.
    • Maintain a professional and welcoming environment by ensuring the lobby area is clean, organized and free of clutter and personal items.
    • Assist with fundraising efforts and special events.
    • Educate the public about the shelter’s mission and services by communicating goals and activities to the community. Be a resource to guide the public in finding services if we do not provide what they need.
    • Working as part of a team with other staff members and volunteers to ensure the smooth operation of the facility. Ensuring the cleanliness of the entire facility, including common areas, storage areas and laundry, lobby, donations and pet food bank.
    • Any other duties as assigned.
